Custom furniture

The furniture you see and use everyday can and should be a beautiful expression of the things that delight you. Almost all of Jim’s work is custom designed, based on conversations with the individual client.

Here are just a few examples of furniture Jim has made over the years. Jim also makes cabinets and architectural elements for permanent installation. See Custom Cabinets and Built-ins for examples.

Tree bed in cherry and curly maple

I first designed this bed in queen size as a show piece. At this point, I have made three of them, including this one in king size. In all three, the arch over the tree is solid western curly maple with the figured grain radiating outward, and the tree is solid cherry. The footboard is solid cherry and curly maple, and is based on an infinity sign.

All the carving is done in the round. (One client set up the bed so they would see the back of the headboard as they entered the room.)

Tree of Life

Night stand

Night stand for tree bed

The tree bed deserves a matching night stand. Here, branches hold up a top like a leafy canopy. Solid cherry, with western curly maple door panels.

Side board in bubinga and Brazilian rosewood

I’m self-taught, and this was one of my earlier pieces. The panels are solid pieces of an exceptionally dark Brazilian rosewood – so dark that the beautiful grain almost disappears, and makes a nice contrast with the brightness of the bubinga.

Solid bubinga, with solid rosewood panels.

Art deco table

A showpiece, whether used as a conference table or a formal dining table.

Sapele pommele top and quilted birdseye maple uprights, with wenge trim. The trestle bar and feet are in clear grain hard maple.

Table top detail: Sapele pommele reminds me of a woman’s hair in a Rosetti painting.

Art Deco Bar

Home bar in figured woods and veneers

I designed this home bar for a client who collects antique radios. It features highly figured sapele pommele and bubinga, with wenge and stainless steel accents. The “speakers” are fitted with speaker cloth.

10 feet long / private collection

Executive desk

This is the view of this desk as you walk into the executive’s office. There’s a drawer on the far side. Highly figured sapele pommele covers the top, skirt, and legs, with accents of wenge.

This delicate table makes a graceful focal point, perfect for a prized vase or a bowl of flowers. Solid cherry.
