Castle door in oak

Solid oak door with brass speakeasy panel. The client wanted this to seem like a normal sized door until you get close to it, and realize it is huge! The speakeasy panel is 6 feet from the floor. I used five extra strong hinges to ensure that it always works smoothly.

Bookcase door, opened

I designed this door to open at a touch, even with a full load of books. The bookcase is mounted in a custom-made steel bracket and turns on hefty custom-made hinge pins. These support the full weight of the loaded door, so it skims just above floor level. I wanted to make sure the door would never make a wear pattern in the carpet or hardwood floor.

Just an functional bookcase, right?
The latch is hidden in the adjoining bookcase. To avoid pinched fingers, the pillars are designed to cover any gap at the hinges as the door is opened and closed.

I also built the door and door frame on the right of the bookcases.
